Basic event properties can be edited from the "General" tab of the properties dialog box.
The event type can take one of the values Event, Person, Location, Work, Relation. The type is fixed when the event is created and cannot be modified afterwards. Event for a given type can be created using the popup menu displayed under the corresponding folder in the main tree (Events, Persons, Locations). Child events can also be created under events of type Event or Person. Refer to the link chapter to check allowed parent-child relations.
Gives database unique name (URI) where event is defined.
Gives event parent name. Name is displayed as per current display language.
Event name for the current language. To edit name for a different language than the current one, exit the dialog box, change the display language and open again the dialog box.
Like in the Gedcom standard, names can be structured using slash separators. Slashes are never displayed except in properties dialog box.
Date and duration (or age) are computed from the defined start/end date and time. This data is displayed in "General" panel for information only (not editable). Event date and time can be modified in "Dating" tab.
If the option is selected the start/end date of the event are computed from its contained child events. Date is evaluated each time a child event is added, removed or modified.
This option is significant when auto-adjust is activated. It specifies that the auto-adjusting must also consider linked events date.
This field must be used to record some notes relative to the event. Notes are edited for current display language.
Defines the place where the event happened. The combo-box is filled with the location defined in the database where event is declared. It can also be set from the tree by draging a location object to the event (see link chapter).
Event date can be defined as punctual or interval, for various calendars and in several time units from century to seconds. The panel given below is part of the general event properties dialog. It allows you to edit event date.
Date can be punctual or interval. To define an interval check-in the "Interval" check box. 2 separate blocks allow to define "from" (above) and "to" (below) dates. If interval is not selected, the second block cannot be edited.
On interval activation, the end date takes by default the time unit and calendar of the start date.
Note: Depending on date unit (e.g. year), some punctual dates can also be interpreted as intervals. For instance, year 1989 can be seen as interval from 1989 January the 1st to 1989 December the 31st.
Date unit can be selected amongs values: None, Century, Year, Month, Day, Hour, Minute and Second. Depending on the choosen level, only a subset of the date fields can be edited. For instance, if month is selected, only year and month fields will be enabled.
None value allows to specify undefined dates.
Month combo-box is pre-filled according to selected calendar. Months name are displayed as per current language when translation is available.
Day combo-box is automatically filled with values compatible with entered year and month. For instance February with 29 days in leap years.
Century unit can be edited as roman or arabian numbers. By convention we consider that centuries start at begining of year 1 (101, 1301, 2001, ...). For instance, XXIth century begun 2001 January the 1st.
For each individual date, you can specify a precision telling for example that date is defined "before" or "after" the specified date. Following option are available: At, Around, Before, After, From, To and Future. By default "At" is selected.
Future has a particular meaning, it tells that date is not yet terminated (will end in the future). When displayed in timeline view, such events are displayed up to today's date.
Date can be specified for a specific calendar amongs gregorian, julian, french revolutionary or civil indian. Changing the option in calendar combo-box will automatically convert current date into new calendar.
Calendars name are displayed as per current language when translation is available.
Epoch defines more or less year zero for the current calendar (expect for Anno Domini for which year zero does not exist). For gregorian and julian calendars, you can select between options Anno Domini and astronomical year. For Indian calendar it is fixed to Saka Era and French period for French Revolutionary calendar.
You can defined date before Epoch (e.g. B.C. dates) by checking-in the "B.Epoch" check box.
Julian Day Number (JDN), is displayed for information only. It is constant whatever is the selected calendar.
Events can be linked together. A relation is oriented from a source object (the linking) to a target object (the linked). There are two kinds of relation:
An event with no parent is a root event.
Event relations are built from the main tree view doing a simple drag and drop operation. By default the drag and drop operation make a link, but clicking the Ctrl key during the operation, allows to make aggregation (I.e. to move an event from a parent to another parent). To break a parent child relation, move the event from its parent to the containing folder.
Following table gives allowed link and aggregation relation with associated semantic.
| Event | Person | Location | Work | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Event | link | yes | yes | no | no |
| aggregation | Child event. E.g. War contains battles. | Person's life event. E.g. Person birth, death, ... . | no | no | |
| Person | link | Person is the event attender, actor, ... | Person sibling relations: parent-child, mariage, ... | no | no |
| aggregation | no | no | no | no | |
| Location | link | Event happended at location. Only one location can be linked to an event. | no | no | no |
| aggregation | no | no | Location is contained inside parent location. | no | |
| Work | link | no | no | no | no |
| aggregation | yes | Person has produced that work | no | no | |
A relation has a name, date, comment and properties. An object relation is created to hold the relation properties. Relation can be specialized giving class and sub-class properties a value. By default the object relation takes the date of the target object in the relation, but this date can be modified afterwards using relation properties dialog.
Child event date can be defined outside parent date range like in picture below.
A period is a particular event that represents a reference in History such as dynastie or era. It is linked with a set events that represent its succesive steps. The duration of a period should logically be the aggregation of the its linked events. For that reason, the period "auto-adjust" and "adjust links" properties should always be activated.
To declare an event as a period, set the "period" property as "true" from the contextual menu in the tree view or on the event properties dialog box. Period is then linked with its event steps.
Periods are displayed, always visible, on the top of the timeline views.
